The Aeolian Islands: sea connections

The Aeolian Islands/in italian le Isole Eolie or Isole Lipari  forms a volcanic archipelago that consists of 6 islands:  Lipari, Salina, Vulcano, Stromboli, Filicudi, Alicudi, Panarea. The arcipelago has two active volcanoes. They are situated in the Tyrrhenian Sea, north of Sicily.

The only way to reach the Aeolian Islands is by ferry or by hydrofoil.  The main port from which it is possible to reach the Aeolian Islands is from Milazzo port. You can check how to reach the Aeolian islands from Milazzo port here: Milazzo – The Aeolian Islands

In this article, however, we are going to talk about how to reach the Aeolian Islands from ports of  Palermo, Messina, Reggio Calabria and Naples.

Palermo – the Aeolian Islands

1. Liberty lines

Liberty lines offers the connection between Palermo and the Aeolian Islands with the hydrofoils. Hidrofoils leave once a day (summer 2016). Alicudi island is the closest island to Palermo, it takes only 2 hours to arrive there.

Messina – the Aeolian Islands

Liberty lines also offers connections between Messina and the Aeolian Islands
with the hydrofoils. Hydrofoils don’t leave for Filicudi e Alicudi. Stromboli, Salina and Vulcano are situted closer to Messina than other Aeolian islands, it takes around 2 hours to get there.

  • Reggio Calabria – the Aeolian Islands

Liberty lines offers connections between Reggio Calabria and the Aeolian Islands only with hydrofoils. Hydrofoils don’t leave for Filicudi and Alicudi. Hydrofoils leave only once a day (summer 2016). Salina and Lipari are two islands that are situated closer to Reggio Calabria than others, you need 2 hours to reach them.

  • Napoli – the Aeolian Islands

1. Siremar

Siremar offers night connections between Naples and the Aeolian Islands with ferries.  Average journey time between Naples and Stromboli (that is the closest island to Naples) is 10 hours, whilst between Naples nad Vulcano (that is the futherst island from Naples) is around 15 hours.  You can book tickets on the official website of  Siremar.

2. SNAV
SNAV offers daily connection between Naples and the Aeolian Islands from 28.05 till 10.09.16 with high speed ferries. Ferries leaves from porto Mergellina in Naples.   The price is around 150 EUR.

3. Alilauro 

Alilauro offers connections between Naples and the Aeolian Islands from  01.06.16 to 11.09.16. Ferries do not leave for Filicudi and Alicudi. In Naples ferries leave from porto  Mergellina. The ticket price starts from 100 EUR. The trip takes only 6 hours.

Rome Naples: train connections

In order to arrive from Naples to Rome by the means of public transport, it is possible to use the bus or the train. You can check here how to get to Naples from Rome by bus: Rome Naples: bus connections.

As for the train there are two options: Italotreno and Trenitalia . The average journey time is 2 hours.

  • Italotreno

  • Trenitalia

The first train to Napoli Centrale leaves from Roma Termini at 05.36, the last one at  22.40. The first train to Roma Termini leaves Napoli Centrale at 04.04, the  last one at  22.50.

Rome Naples how to reach

  • Baltour

The bus company Baltour offers daily connection between Rome and Naples. There are two different lines. The average journey time is 3 hours. In Rome the bus leaves from Tiburtina bus terminal. In Naples the bus leaves and arrives to Corso Lucci – Metropark that is situated near the central train station of Naples on piazza Garibaldi. The avergae journey time is 3 hours. The cost is  12-15 EUR.

Flixbus offers daily connection between Rome and Naples. In Rome the bus arrives and leaves from  Tiburtina bus terminal.   In Naples the bus arrives and leaves from Corso Lucci – Metropark,that is situated near the central train station of Naples on piazza Garibaldi.  The average journey time is 3 hours. Circumvesuviana timetables and rates

Circumvesuviana is a railway operating services in the East of the Naples metropolitan area. It is managed by EAV Ente Autonomo Volturno. The Circumvesuviana railway service covers a wide catchment area of over 2 million people, distributed in 47 municipalities, including Scafati, San Valentino Torio and Sarno in the province of Salerno and Avella and Baiano in the province of Avellino. The network forms an important commercial artery, and provides services to the important tourist destinations of Pompeii (How to reach Pompeii) and Herculaneum (How to reach Herculaneum).

All routes start from the Napoli Porta Nolana terminus near the Porta Nolana, and pass through Napoli Garibaldi station before splitting into several branches to towns in the province. A journey along the entirety of the longest route, the 47 km (29 min) from Naples to Sorrento, takes about one hour.
